The Coachmakers’ engineering scholarship awards actively support suitably experienced and motivated young aircraft mechanics, technicians and engineers develop their careers by offering awards to enhance their career qualifications.
These scholarship awards can be to assist with the cost of obtaining an EASA or UK Part 66 B1 or B2 aircraft maintenance licence for fixed wing, rotary wing, unmanned air vehicle or other aircraft type or for any other career enhancing training or qualifications. The awards are available to applicants nationwide who must be permanently resident in the UK, be seeking aerospace related engineering training and be in permanent employment with either:
- A UK or EASA approved maintenance (part 145), manufacturing or design (part 21) organisation, or;
- An aerospace related test, research, or development organisation.
The application must be recommended and supported by their employer, who must also declare that the candidate will be allowed appropriate time to complete the required studies, training and examinations. Applicants must be under the age of 35 on 31st August following the date of application, with nationality and residency in accordance with the Coachmakers’ standard terms and conditions.
Candidates are responsible for selecting, applying for and purchasing a Part 66 or other training course for which the awards are made. The scholarship will be paid directly to the training provider in stages commensurate with the modules being undertaken for the duration of the course to subsidise course fees. Should the award winner withdraw from or be removed from the course for any reason, scholarship payments to the training provider will cease at the point of cessation of study.
The application for the Coachmakers’ award may be made either prior to acceptance on a course or after the course has commenced. The successful applicant will be expected to provide proof of course enrolment before the first scholarship instalment will be paid to the chosen training provider.
Candidates should complete the application form as fully as possible. Selected candidates will subsequently be short-listed for interview based on the quality and substance of their written applications. Those called forward for interview will be expected to demonstrate knowledge of and discuss:
1. Part 66 Aircraft Maintenance Licence structure and pre-requisites.
2. Part 66 Aircraft Maintenance Licence experience requirements.
3. Part 66 Aircraft Maintenance Licence study and examination options.
4. Their own career plan and goals, and their perceived benefit from the award.
5. Their own study plan, including where and how they intend to study and sit examinations.
6. The provision of funds from their own sources in addition to the scholarship.
7. The support to be offered by their current employer.
The awards are granted in the names of prolific past Master Coachmakers, significant aerospace engineers and our sponsor companies who support the scholarship programmes and actively engage in post award activities. The livery may choose which in name to offer an award which might compliment the winner’s studies. Current scholarships are offered in the names of Aerotron, Victor Gauntlett and Lockheed Martin UK.
Those candidates selected for the short list will be expected to attend a selection interview in the London area to make their case for the grant of the award, including how the award would be spent. No presentation or submissions are required but the applicant may submit a short presentation to accompany their application if they wish to do so, accompanied by a short personal statement which then forms the basis of an interview process. The interview panel comprises some very nice Coachmaker liverymen who are established industry and academic people who have a committed desire to assist and help the careers of young people.
Furthermore, those selected for interview will be required to bring the following documents for inspection by the Coachmakers’ Aerospace Awards Committee:
1. A current passport or driving licence for photo identification.
2. A company ID card.
3. Certificates of academic qualifications.
4. Proof of a UK address.
The winner of the scholarship will also be invited to, and expected to attend, the Coachmakers’ Aerospace Industry Dinner held annually in November at a prestigious location in London. At this event, the winner will be presented with a Certificate of Achievement in the presence of several senior executives from the UK and European aerospace industries. The dinner is a black-tie event, the cost of which will be borne by the Coachmakers. However, any travel and any accommodation expenses incurred must be borne by individual winner.
Not only do these awards offer opportunities and financial assistance in the short term, association with the Coachmakers is potentially long-term and offers exciting networking opportunities. Our website gives more information on how industry and military affiliations have evolved from our historic roots in the coachmaking and coach harness making trades.
Applications for this award are open and close at midnight on 28th February 2026. Selection interviews are expected to be held during late March or early April.
Candidates should complete the online application form here.
