Aerotron scholar achieves B1.1 licence
My name is Lewis Brooks, I was the winner of the Aerotron Scholarship 2018, this was a £5,000 award to spend on courses for European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) Part-147 Modules. I was lucky to meet some of the Court on the evening of the Aerospace Industry Dinner in November 2018 where I accepted my award.
I am pleased to be able to write to you all, with the news that I was granted my B1.1 licence from EASA in January last year. I am so thrilled regarding this achievement. I wanted to express my sincere gratitude to the Master, Wardens, Clerk & Court, the Worshipful Company and Aerotron for their support as this has made a huge difference to my career progression. Since this scholarship has been awarded, it has allowed me to study for all 17 modules required to get a B1.1 engineer’s licence. I studied most of the modules at Resource Group, Kemble airport and a few with the Civil Aviation Authority, Gatwick Airport. The modules were extremely challenging with some being a three-week course followed by a two-hour examination. My favourite module was module 15 which was about gas turbine engines. Looking back on this process it has shown me how fortunate I have been to win the Aerotron scholarship.
Since my first encounter with the Coachmakers in 2018 the past few years can only be described as extremely difficult, uncertain, and challenging, particularly for the aviation industry. Fortunately, I have been mostly unaffected, whilst working at Bombardier London Service centre, I was lucky enough to continue working throughout the lockdowns.
I also have some great news to share about my recent type that has been added to my Part-66 licence. After a six-week course I now am type rated on Bombardier Global 5000/6000. I am looking forward to taking on the responsibility of being a type-rated engineer and improving my knowledge and skills throughout my career. I hope to obtain further type ratings in the coming years. My next goal is to be dual qualified with both B1 and B2 licences.
As the pandemic eases and The Coachmakers’ social events resume, I hope that everyone in the Company remains safe and continues to help others in the same way that they helped me. I was fortunate enough to attend one of the recent events at the National Space Centre in January, where I accepted the Master’s invitation to apply to become a Young Coachmaker. If the Company feels that I can be of any service to either the organisation or future award winners, then I would be more than happy to be involved and offer any assistance.
