University Scholarship Awards

Application for the Coachmakers’ University Scholarship Awards

The Coachmakers’ University Scholarship Awards have been actively supporting young people in their aerospace engineering studies since the 1970s. There are currently many awards, normally of up to £5,000 each, to support aeronautical engineering university students and mechanical engineering university students whose studies demonstrate an aeronautical or space bias at any level of university study (Bachelor, Master or PhD) from any of the universities listed below.

1. Cranfield University
2. Imperial College London
3. City, University of London
4. Kingston University, London
5. Brunel University London
6. Queen Mary University of London
7. University of Southampton
8. University of Bristol

The awards are available for undergraduate and post graduate students who will be under the age of 35 on 31st August following the date of application, with nationality and residency in accordance with the Coachmakers’ standard terms and conditions and be recommended by the university as having the academic ability to be successful in their chosen studies. The applicant should describe the purpose for which they would like the award, make a case for the granting of the award and state the sum requested, noting that the Coachmakers likes to support constructive project work which is likely to enhance the degree studies.

Those candidates selected for the short list will be expected to attend a selection interview in the London City area and make their case for the grant of the award, including how the award would be spent. No presentation or submissions are required but the applicant may submit a short presentation to accompany their application if they wish to do so, accompanied by a short personal statement which then forms the basis of an interview process. The interview panel comprises some very nice Coachmaker liverymen who are established industry and academic people who have a committed desire to assist and help the careers of young people.

The awards are granted in the names of prolific past Master Coachmakers, significant aerospace engineers and our sponsor companies which support the scholarship programmes and actively engage in post-award activities. The livery may choose which in name to offer an award which might compliment the winner’s studies.

Current scholarships are offered in the names of Sir Sydney Camm, Airbus Defence and Space, Sir Frederick Handley Page, Eric Beverley, Lockheed Martin UK and Gp Capt Gerry Bunn CBE.

Applications for the university awards are open and close at midnight on 31st January 2026. Applicants should be available to attend a selection interview in person, video interviews are not normally carried out, in London during late February 2026.

The winner of the scholarship will also be invited to, and expected to attend, the Coachmakers’ Aerospace Industry Dinner held annually in November at a prestigious location in London. At this event, the winner will be presented with a Certificate of Achievement in the presence of several senior executives from the UK and European aerospace industries. The dinner is a black-tie event, the cost of which will be borne by the Coachmakers. However, any travel and any accommodation expenses incurred must be borne by individual winner.

Not only do these awards offer opportunities and financial assistance in the short term, association with the Coachmakers is potentially long-term and offers exciting networking opportunities.
