Master’s Message September 2026

Welcome to my first Master’s message.

I want to begin by thanking all those who contributed to make the 2026 Election Court and Service of Thanksgiving a most memorable occasion. The enthusiasm and support I have received from everybody I met is most humbling, and I will do my utmost to make our 350th year as enjoyable, successful and memorable as I can.

I was delighted we had a full house for the Election Court Dinner at Tallow Chandlers’ Hall, and apologies to those who sat on the waiting list. However the future dinners for the year are all at most impressive venues with large capacity, and I look forward to seeing you all in the future.

I am reminded what my predecessor, Past Master Richard Charlesworth MVO, stated in his Master’s message at this time last year; supporting the dinners and events of the Livery is crucial to its success.

I am fully appreciative of the costs involved in attending an event in London. However, this year is rather special, and I anticipate full venues. By your attendance, not only can we share the fellowship that is engrained in our Livery, but you will also be contributing to our charitable endeavours.

I have also instigated a new initiative for those who wish to contribute directly to the Company and be acknowledged throughout the anniversary year by becoming a 1677 supporter. There are two opportunities:

The 1677 Patrons’ Circle

The 1677 Patrons’ Circle brings together a small group of individuals, families and well-wishers who wish to make a significant personal contribution to the success and legacy of the 350th anniversary year.

As a Patron you will play a leading role in enabling the Company to celebrate its heritage while investing in its future. Membership of this small and exclusive Circle is intended for those who share the Company’s passion for craftsmanship, engineering, innovation, heritage and the development of future generations. Thus, ensuring the anniversary creates a legacy lasting well beyond 2027.

Patrons will receive several select chances to engage with events throughout the year.

Alternatively, you may wish to become a 1677 Associate

The 1677 Associates offers a larger number of members, friends, and well-wishers an opportunity to make a meaningful contribution to our historic anniversary. By joining, you will become part of a community committed to celebrating the Company’s distinguished past and helping to secure its future. Collectively, 1677 Associates’ gifts will make an important contribution to the anniversary programme and to the Company’s wider educational and heritage ambitions.

More details of the 1677 Patrons’ Circle and 1677 Associates can be later found in this edition of Coachlines.

During the past year, a huge amount of enterprising and planning work has been done, and is ongoing, to ensure our functions have that extra 350 sprinkling of magic. I am most grateful for all those working with me to ensure we deliver what we have promised in line with this year’s mission statement.

“To celebrate the 350th anniversary of our Charter by bringing Liverymen together in fellowship, honouring the heritage, craftsmanship and skills of the Coachmakers, and demonstrating their enduring relevance in the modern world.”

Thank you for reading this, and I will end by reiterating what I said on that proud day on 1st September: “As a genuine coachmaker, I can only say how honoured I feel to have been elected as your Master for this momentous year. And I look forward to sharing some wonderful celebratory moments with you.”
