In memory – Liveryman Philip Caine

Liveryman Philip Caine, who died last December, became a Coachmaker in 2010, introduced by his great City chum Gerry Clark. He used to joke that his best qualification for the Company was through his wife Francesca who started her working life as a Rolls-Royce apprentice.

Philip was born and educated in the Isle of Man before reading Mathematics at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge. He then had a long career in the City, culminating as Head of Regulatory Complaints at the London Stock Exchange, a role that perfectly used his encyclopaedic knowledge of finance and seemingly effortless prose. He took particular pleasure in encouraging youngsters joining the Exchange to believe in themselves and to make their way in the financial services industry, no matter what their background. He treated everyone equally, be they senior partner or messenger, never lost his temper and always saw the funny side of things.

He loved being part of the great City Livery tradition, becoming a Freeman and a member of both the Worshipful Company of Coachmakers and the Musicians’ Company. Music was his lifelong passion – he particularly enjoyed the Coachmakers’ visit to the Royal Mews and dreamed about travelling in the Gold State Coach. His very well-attended funeral in London included many of his City friends and was a suitably musical affair, “his last great concert”.
