De Havilland Scholarship winner announced for 2024
The De Havilland Scholarship selection day was held at Old Warden on 24th August 2024 and we are pleased to announce that the winner is Harry Atkin.
The award is a joint project between the Cambridge Flying Group and the Coachmakers to fund a young person to learn to fly in the vintage DH82a Tiger Moth. The Scholarship, which is the most sought after of our awards, covers a significant amount of the cost of learning to fly, with the recipient expected to fund the remainder. The selection day was well supported by the Shuttleworth Trust, which gratuitously provided the facilities required and for which we are very grateful.
Harry Atkin studied Aerospace Technology with Pilot Studies at the University of Hertfordshire, where he graduated with first class honours. Harry now works for Kennet Aviation based at Old Warden as a Computer Aided Design (CAD) engineer. In his role, he takes parts of vintage and classic aircraft which are being restored, constructs engineering drawings of those parts and identifies and sources the correct or approved replacement materials. Harry’s work allows restored parts to be remanufactured to airworthiness standards.
During the selection process the competition was stiff, with very high quality individuals being interviewed, but Harry impressed the panel with his personal qualities, his genuine enthusiasm and commitment to vintage and classic aviation and engineering. The panel is confident that Harry will make a significant contribution to the Cambridge Flying Group, to engineering and to the Coachmakers in the near and long term.
Harry also undertakes private work re-engineering parts for classic aircraft and automobiles, so if you wish to avail yourself of his services please contact the aerospace team.
