Could you help a future engineer?

The Coachmakers is proud to be in its third year of sponsoring young people to become engineers of the future through the Arkwright Scholarships scheme.

This year Emily McClintock and Pranay Shah have achieved the honour of receiving this highly regarded award, which has provided a foundation for many exceptional careers in engineering. Both our scholars are incredibly bright students who are expected to gain top grades at A Level and go on to study engineering at exceptional universities. I can confidently predict these two will have great careers, but we need your help to enable them to take that first step. They are both keen to get involved with engineering companies and gain some work experience.

Pranay has a passion for aero engineering. “I have just finished my mocks and received my results which are Maths (A*), Further Maths (A) and Physics (B). I am hoping to improve on these results by the next set of mocks in June. Apart from that, I am currently working on a couple of projects. One is a model rocket which has yet to see flight and my other project is designing and constructing a model wind tunnel.” He lives in North London and would like to gain work experience in an engineering company, preferably in aeronautical engineering in the area.

Emily is based in Banstead, Surrey and is excited about a career in engineering, particularly in motor sports. In a recent update, she says: “I am still doing A level Physics, Chemistry, Maths and German and I achieved AABB in those subjects in the first term. I am currently participating in Cambridge University’s Davidson Inventors’ Challenge, and we are researching the creation of a renewable plastic material out of chestnuts and seaweed. I am also completing an engineering elective at school, where we are working on a mock natural disaster recovery project.” Emily would also like to gain work experience in her local area, ideally in motor sports engineering, but a more general auto engineering opportunity would also be appreciated.

If any Coachmaker could help by offering work experience to either of our two amazing young people, helping them gain that invaluable real life experience of working in our industries, please do let me know at a.blatherwick@btconnect.com and I will put you in touch to make the necessary arrangements.

Arkwright Engineering Scholarships is a programme within The Smallpeice Trust (a registered charity) and is the most esteemed scholarship scheme of its type in the UK.

The Arkwright Engineering Scholarships programme identifies, inspires and nurtures future brilliant engineers by awarding scholarships, through a rigorous selection process, to high-calibre students who apply when in Year 11 (England and Wales), S4 (Scotland), Year 12 (Northern Ireland). These scholarships support students through their A Levels or Scottish Highers and encourage students to pursue engineering, computing or technical design at university or through a higher-level apprenticeship and to pursue careers in the field.
