Clerk’s notes – July 2025

I start this month with a brief apology about my previous notes in June. After giving such a detailed presentation of the process on creativity and composition of the Bluebird K7 Suite – written to commemorate Donald Campbell’s life, his time spent on Coniston Water and the future of Bluebird – I did not include a link to be able to listen to the music although I fully intended to.

This was not a mistake but a last-minute adjustment to allow the music copyright process to complete – something we thought would have been finalised by the time of publication. This process is required as some of the music will be performed at the Lord Mayor’s Show. As soon as a I can release the link, I would be delighted to share it with those who wish to have a listen via the closest Clerk’s notes in Coachlines.

So, onto more important matters: the Clerk’s notes for this month. As you know my previous articles have mainly tried to link the Company with my background; an odd juxtaposition but hopefully something a little ‘different’ and interesting.

This month I would like to bring all this together and write about the relationship between music, the automotive and aerospace industries.

We all know that music has a unique ability to transcend boundaries, influencing various aspects of our unexpected ways and industry is no different. The automotive and aerospace industries, though seemingly unrelated to the world of music, have been significantly shaped by it. The fascinating relationship between music and these two dynamic sectors is surprising. Just how music has inspired innovation, enhanced experiences, and driven technological advancements is a little-known fact.

Music and the automotive industry

The automotive industry has a long-standing relationship with music, one that has evolved over the decades to enhance the driving experience and shape car culture.

1. Enhancing the driving experience

From the introduction of car radios in the 1930s to the sophisticated sound systems of today, music has been an integral part of the driving experience. Early car radios transformed long, monotonous drives into enjoyable journeys, providing entertainment and information. This innovation not only made driving more pleasurable but also established a strong emotional connection between drivers and their vehicles.

Modern vehicles are equipped with advanced audio systems that offer high-fidelity sound, creating an immersive listening experience. Companies such as Bose, Bang & Olufsen, and Harman Kardon have partnered with car manufacturers to develop custom sound systems that cater to music lovers and casual listeners alike. These systems are designed to deliver crystal-clear sound, making every drive a concert-like experience.

2. Shaping car culture

Music and car culture have evolved together, influencing each other in significant ways. The rise of rock ‘n’ roll in the 1950s and 1960s, for example, coincided with the growing popularity of hot rods and muscle cars. Songs such as ‘Little Deuce Coupe’ by The Beach Boys celebrated car culture, creating anthems that resonated with enthusiasts. This synergy between music and cars continues today, with genres such as hip-hop and electronic dance music playing a significant role in shaping modern car culture.

Car manufacturers often use music in their advertising campaigns to evoke emotions and create memorable brand experiences. Iconic commercials featuring catchy tunes can leave a lasting impression, influencing consumer perceptions and driving sales – ask Thierry Henry and a multitude of celebrities.

3. Technological innovations

The automotive industry has continually sought to improve the in-car audio experience. Advances in sound engineering and speaker technology have led to the development of high-fidelity sound systems that provide immersive audio experiences. Innovations such as noise-cancelling technology and 3D audio have further enhanced the quality of in-car music, making it an essential feature of modern vehicles.

Music and the aerospace industry

While the connection between music and the automotive industry is well-documented, the influence of music on the aerospace industry is equally fascinating, albeit less obvious.

1. Inspiration and creativity

Music has been a source of inspiration for many aerospace engineers and designers. The creativity and emotional power of music can stimulate innovative thinking and problem-solving. For instance, the rhythmic patterns and structures in music can mirror the precision and complexity required in aerospace engineering. This connection between music and engineering creativity has led to groundbreaking advancements in aerospace technology.

2. Sound engineering and acoustics

The principles of sound engineering and acoustics are crucial in both the music and aerospace industries. In aerospace, understanding and controlling sound is vital for designing quieter and more efficient aircraft. Techniques developed in the music industry, such as soundproofing and vibration control, have been adapted for use in aircraft design. This cross-industry exchange of knowledge has led to significant improvements in passenger comfort and aircraft performance.

3. Music in space exploration

Music has also played a role in space exploration. Astronauts often take music with them on missions to help cope with the isolation and stress of space travel (although arguably less stressful – depending on how you commute – this mirrors the multitude of passengers on trains with headphones on or ear-buds firmly secured!).

Music can also provide a sense of normalcy and emotional support, making long-duration missions more bearable. Additionally, music has been used in space-related media and public outreach, helping to inspire and engage the public in the wonders of space exploration.

Conclusion

The influence of music on the automotive and aerospace industries is profound and multifaceted. In the automotive sector, music has enhanced the driving experience, shaped car culture, and driven technological innovations. In the aerospace industry, music has inspired creativity, informed sound engineering practices, and supported astronauts during missions.

These connections highlight the power of music to transcend its traditional boundaries, influencing and enriching various aspects of human life and technological advancement. As we continue to explore new frontiers in both industries, the interplay between music and technology will undoubtedly lead to even more exciting innovations and experiences.

In a company such as ours such bizarre collaborations as highlighted above, can be applied with people from entirely diverse backgrounds and with different skills and thoughts, but the point is that everyone who wishes to, has the opportunity to contribute. This is what makes us so strong and binds us together, indeed we are definitely greater than the sum of our parts.

Company events

Election Court 2025

As many of you will know, due to renovation work at Tallow Chandlers Hall, this year‘s Election Court will be held at St James Garlickhythe.

I hope members of the Company will understand that due to the restriction on numbers, the actual ceremony and subsequent reception is only open to court members at present. This said, it is likely that there will be some remaining places available and once confirmed I expect to open it to the rest of the company on a first-come, first-served basis. I will send a note beforehand to ensure people are aware places are available.
