Behind the Scenes at the Royal Mews

On Friday 17th July, led by Master Richard Charlesworth, a group of Coachmakers and their guests enjoyed a fascinating guided tour of the Royal Mews at Buckingham Palace, one of the world’s finest working stables and home to the royal household’s historic carriages, ceremonial horses and state vehicles.

The visit was made possible through the Company’s valued contacts within the coaching world, and members were privileged to be hosted by Stuart Russell, a Royal Mews coachman and Freeman of the Worshipful Company of Saddlers. Stuart brought the experience to life by sharing his extensive knowledge and first-hand insights into the history and day-to-day operation of the Royal Mews.

Before joining the Royal Mews, Stuart served as a Master Saddler with the King’s Troop, Royal Horse Artillery, and has driven horses in some of the nation’s most significant royal and state occasions, including coronations and ceremonial processions through London. His expertise and enthusiasm made the tour both informative and thoroughly engaging.

The tour provided a rare behind-the-scenes glimpse into the storage, maintenance and care of the Royal Household’s magnificent collection of state coaches, royal motor cars, ceremonial harnesses and horses. Members gained a deeper appreciation of the extraordinary craftsmanship, heritage and dedication required to preserve these historic vehicles and traditions.

For members of the Company, whose own heritage is rooted in the craftsmanship of coachmaking, the visit was particularly meaningful. It offered a unique opportunity to see centuries-old skills still being practised at the highest level, demonstrating how traditional craftsmanship continues to support modern ceremonial life.
