A letter from the Editor July 2026

Dear Readers,

There is something rather special about moments of transition. They invite us to look back with gratitude while also turning our attention to what comes next. As I write this introduction to the July edition of Coachlines, I realise that this spirit of reflection and renewal runs through almost every story you’ll read in these pages – and, indeed, through my own journey with this publication.

From the Master’s Message and the Clerk’s Notes to the fascinating story of a Coachmaker who quite literally bridged two ages, we are reminded that every generation inherits a legacy – and leaves one behind.

That legacy comes vividly to life through our exclusive visit behind the scenes at the Royal Mews, where centuries-old skills continue to be practised with extraordinary precision, pride and craftsmanship. I’m sure you will also enjoy watching the film that Senior Warden shared with you about the Coaching Club meet at Sandringham.

We extend a warm welcome to our newest Freemen and Liverymen, whose enthusiasm, expertise and commitment will help shape the next chapter of our Company. Equally inspiring is the story of one grateful apprentice and two proud Coachmakers, illustrating perfectly why investing in young people remains our Company’s greatest motto.

As we continue our journey on the ‘Road to 350’, preparations are gathering momentum. You can also access the full presentation deck, together with a recording of the Coachmakers’ first-ever all-Committee webinar, held on 15th July, to learn more about the exciting plans taking shape for this significant milestone in our Company’s long and distinguished history.

For me personally, this edition carries special significance.

Three years ago, when I assumed the role of Communications Committee Chairman, I also had the privilege of becoming Editor of Coachlines. Looking back, it has been an immensely rewarding journey. As there will be no August edition, this July issue will be my last Coachlines as Editor.

On 1st September, at the Election Court that marks the beginning of the Coachmakers’ 350th Anniversary Year, I will officially step down as Chairman of the Communications Committee. Subject to election, I shall begin a new chapter of service by joining the Master and Wardens’ team as Junior Warden.

Editing Coachlines has never been a solo endeavour. My sincere thanks go to my brilliant Comms team, my Deputy Editor David Barzilay, and to every contributor who has shared their stories, photographs and ideas.

There is one person, however, whose contribution deserves special recognition: our wonderful Technical Editor, Ann Neilson. She has quietly worked behind the scenes, with exceptional professionalism and meticulous attention to detail. She is, quite simply, the unsung hero of Coachlines, and it has been an absolute pleasure to work alongside her. Thank you, Ann, for everything you have done.

Finally, my heartfelt thanks go to you, our readers. Your encouragement, your kind words, and, above all, your unwavering support have been the reason Coachlines has flourished.

I hope you enjoy reading this July edition of Coachlines. While it marks my final issue as Editor, it is by no means a farewell. As we look ahead to our historic 350th Anniversary Year, I am excited to continue serving the Company in my new role and look forward to meeting and working with many of you in the years ahead.

Here’s to our fellowship, our friendship, and the many memorable moments still to come.
