The Biggin Hill Heritage Hangar, on the famous Battle of Britain airfield, is a restoration facility dedicated to putting Spitfires back in the air. Alongside sometimes as many as 13 Spitfires in the hangar there is a Hurricane and a Messerschmitt 109 to see. Biggin ‘on the Bump’ played a major role in the battle and there is a small museum on the airfield explaining its role and history.
Typically there are a number of ongoing restorations in progress in the Hangar and there might even be parts such as complete wings in manufacture. You will see what goes into putting a Spitfire back in the air, how they are maintained and what is involved in their day-to-day operation. You may have seen the TV documentary which featured the recommissioning of a Spitfire for the Greek Air Force by the Heritage Hangar.
The Hangar also offers flights in a two-seater Spitfire but these are not included in the tour on this occasion.
The tour is limited to 20 and booking will be in order of application.
