At the kind invitation of Mark Broadbent, Liveryman and Court Steward, Coachmakers have been given the opportunity to visit Fenix Carriages & Driving Centre, Clayhidon, Devon.

Fenix Carriages is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of bespoke horse drawn carriages as well as specialising in restoration of historic carriages for museums and collections throughout the UK. Mark’s collection is among one of the most comprehensive in the country, and houses some rare carriages, including the newly restored mail coach, the Quicksilver; recently unveiled at the Coachmakers’ Annual Banquet 2019.

During the past 40 years Fenix Carriages has developed with the sport and grown to an organisation building modern and traditional carriages, offering training and schooling facilities and advising bodies throughout the world.

This is a fantastic opportunity for anyone with an existing passion for the sport or for those wanting to learn more. The trip will include:

  • Tour of the carriage museum, featuring a range of historic coaches and carriages, including a viewing of the historic Quicksilver coach and a presentation on its restoration.
  • Buffet lunch among the outstanding collection of coaches and carriages, with Mark on hand to guide us and answer any questions;
  • Workshop tour with spring making demonstration by in-house Springsmith, Pete Andrew, winner of the 2008 Carriage Driving Award;
  • Tour of the stables and world class training facilities & an introduction to the horses and team.

The day will conclude with a traditional Devon cream tea before departing for home.

For anyone who wishes to stay locally on Tuesday night, a dinner will be held at a local inn. While attendees are asked to make their own arrangements for accommodation, a list of local hotels is available on request.

Anyone staying overnight is also welcome to join Mark for a coach drive the following day on one of his traditional coaches at an Additional £10 per head, which goes towards fundraising for the Livery.

Overnight accommodation, dinner on Tuesday night and lunch on Wednesday will be at an additional cost.
