Join the Master for a road trip to RNAS Twatt (yes it really does exist!)

23rd July 2023 @ 8:00 am29th July 2023 @ 5:00 pm

  • This event has passed.

What do you think you are doing between 23rd July and 29th July 2023? Read this and perhaps think again.

The Master, with the Clerk and the Assistant Clerk in the van (that’s Jackspeak for “at the front”), will lead a road trip through some of the most iconic scenery of northern England and Scotland to visit (amongst many other places) the site of HMS Tern at the former Royal Naval Air Station Twatt in the Orkney Islands.

You can join them for this epic adventure that will take in the Kielder Forest, the Forth Rail Bridge, Glencoe, Loch Ness, Inverness, a little seaside tea shop on the east coast of Scotland run by a nice lady from Manchester, the mighty Pentland Firth, numerous sites of historical interest in the Orkney Islands, the Pitlochry Fish Ladder, the Jim Clark Museum at Duns and then onward to wherever you keep your slippers with a sense of satisfaction and fellowship.

However, due to challenge of finding enough rooms in some of the intended overnight stops, the trip is restricted to include 10 vehicles and up to 20 people.

The Master will be travelling in one of his older Bentleys (naturally) and the Clerk and Assistant Clerk will be riding a recently acquired 1995 Moto Guzzi California 1100i resplendent in yellow and black. Eccentric is good but even in July, remember that the Scottish weather can be fickle.

Intended programme:

Sunday 23rd July – Gather at the Bridge Hotel, Wetherby

Monday 24th July – Wetherby to South Queensferry; overnight at the Hawse Inn

Tuesday 25th July – South Queensferry to Inverness via Glencoe; overnight at the Kingsmill Hotel

Wednesday 26th July – Inverness to Orkney Islands staying in the Standing Stones Hotel, Stennis

Thursday 27th July – Tour various sites on the Orkney Mainland

Friday 28th July – Orkney Islands to Pitlochry; overnight at the Hydro Hotel

Saturday 29th July – Pitlochry to Jim Clark Museum at Duns then disperse for return home

Cost:
Depending on the thirst of your intended mode of travel, and your individual thirst at each overnight stopping place, the costs are estimated as follows:
Per couple travelling together: circa £1,750
Per single traveller: circa £1,250

Full details of routes and available coffee/comfort stops along the way will be produced and distributed beforehand and the night before each day’s activity the Clerk will deliver a short address about what the next day will offer.

Lunches will be self-funded ad-hoc and on the hoof. Dinner each evening will be arranged to include drinks pre-dinner, a meal taken together with wine for which the cost will be shared pro-rata, paid by the Company and then collected from individuals after the event. Drinks after dinner will be for individuals to pay as required.
