16.12.21 Liveryman Sarah Dawson
To be an observer or to be a participant?
Thirteen years have passed since I was clothed into the Livery of The Worshipful Company of Coachmakers and Coach Harness Makers, writes Liveryman Sarah Dawson. Over these years I have followed with interest the many diverse facets of the Livery.
As a girl from the north, I had not anticipated the diary clashes with work versus the opportunities presented to me as a Liveryman. From afar I have been proud to be part of the support and recognition given to young people as they work towards excellence in skills within their chosen careers. I have been impressed by the links to innovation within industry and new initiatives including climate and the environment.
I have attended some of the annual formal dinners, and in September 2019, I exercised my right, as a Freeman of the City of London, to drive sheep across London Bridge – a wonderful experience and privilege which all Liverymen ought to include in their schedule as an opportunity not to be missed. The experience sowed the seed, and then along came Covid-19.
I thought I would once again step back from my involvement with the Livery, but I am pleased to say this was not the case. During the past year I and many others have enjoyed renewed kinship via Zoom. It began with a celebration of the Battle of Britain and followed with a virtual historic City of London ’pub crawl’.
The months passed and we have been allowed to socialise and mix again. The opportunity in October to visit Cranfield University and appreciate the links with and shared technology between aerospace and automotive gave those who were lucky enough to be there a real insight into the research into, and future of, transport.
November gave me the chance to join fellow Liverymen in the Lord Mayor’s Show – a rare occasion to walk the streets of our beautiful and historic city and really appreciate all we passed, including the crowds who were so pleased to see us all. On each occasion I have been made to feel welcome, renewed past acquaintances and made new ones. My recent personal involvement has meant I now feel I am part of something, not just an observer from afar. I would encourage you all to engage and play your part in person as often as you can.
