The Sir Sydney Camm Scholarship

Application for the Coachmaker Sir Sydney Camm Scholarship

The Worshipful Company of Coachmakers and Coach Harness Makers uses its charitable funds to support education at various levels in the Automotive, Aerospace and Coach Building industries. The Sir Sydney Camm Scholarship is awarded in memory of the outstanding designer Sir Sydney Camm CBE FRAeS who over his lifetime designed over 50 aircraft types from the Hawker Hart of the 1930s, through the iconic Hurricane and Hunter fighters, to his vision for the VTOL Harrier.

The scholarship is awarded annually to a student at Kingston University London who has shown considerable promise on a Foundation Degree Course and is recommended for a “top-up” course to BSc (Hons).

The Scholarship is open to students with UK nationality and is currently worth £5,000 as a contribution towards fees payable by a successful Foundation Degree graduate wishing, and judged suitable by the university, to complete the required further year of study. Our aim is to allow a young person with ability, determination, ambition and potential to make the very best of these qualities when the rising cost of university education might otherwise prevent them from doing so.

To apply for the Scholarship please complete the online application using the link below. Applications will be forwarded to the Head of the Department of Aerospace and Aircraft Engineering who will then draw up a short list of applicants for interview by the Coachmakers Aerospace Awards Committee in July.

The winner will be announced soon after the selection process and in good time to make all arrangements for completing the “top-up” course. The winner will also be invited to and expected to attend the Coachmakers Aerospace Industry Dinner held annually in November at a prestigious location in London. At this event the winner will be presented with a Certificate of Achievement in the presence of several senior executives from the UK and European Aerospace Industries. The dinner is a black tie event, the cost of which will be borne by the Coachmakers. However, any travel and any accommodation expenses incurred must be borne by individual winner.

Not only does this award offer financial help with fees in the short term, association with the Coachmakers is potentially long-term and offers exciting networking opportunities. Our website gives more information on how industry and military affiliations have evolved from our historic roots in the Coachmaking and Coach Harness making trades.
