Sir Frederick Handley Page Scholarship

Application for the Coachmaker Sir Frederick Handley Page Scholarship

The Worshipful Company of Coachmakers and Coach Harness Makers uses its charitable funds to support education at various levels in the Automotive, Aerospace and Coach Building industries. The Sir Frederick Handley Page Scholarship is awarded in memory of the great aircraft pioneer and industrialist Sir Frederick Handley Page CBE FRAeS who, among his many other appointments, achievements and contribution to the UK aerospace industry, was a principal lecturer at City University London and, in 1943, Master Coachmaker.

The scholarship is awarded annually to a student at City University who, having shown commendable ability, potential and determination at First Degree level, aspires to complete a Master’s Degree in Aerospace Engineering.

The Scholarship is open to students with UK nationality and is currently worth £5,000 as a contribution towards fees payable by a third year student wishing, and judged suitable by the university, to complete a 4th year of study to progress to MEng level. Our aim is to allow a young person with ability, determination, ambition and potential to make the very best of these qualities when the rising cost of university education might otherwise prevent them from doing so.

To apply for the Scholarship please complete the online application using the link below. Applications will be forwarded to the Head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Aeronautics who will then draw up a short list of applicants for interview by the Coachmakers Aerospace Awards Committee in June.

The winner will be announced soon after the selection process and in good time to make all arrangements for completing a 4th year at City University. The winner will also be invited to and expected to attend the Coachmakers Aerospace Industry Dinner held annually in November at a prestigious location in London. At this event the winner will be presented with a Certificate of Achievement in the presence of several senior executives from the UK and European Aerospace Industries. The dinner is a black tie event, the cost of which will be borne by the Coachmakers. However, any travel and any accommodation expenses incurred must be borne by individual winner.
Not only does this award offer financial help with fees in the short term, association with the Coachmakers is potentially long-term and offers exciting networking opportunities. Our website gives more information on how industry and military affiliations have evolved from our historic roots in the Coachmaking and Coach Harness making trades.
