Master’s message 4th May 2020
Well, Boris is back and the government is making it clear that we should not expect anything more than a slow and gradual relaxation of the lockdown, and his medical advisors are suggesting we will need a vaccine before a return to any semblance of normality. We had a discussion between the Wardens and Clerk last Friday, at which we agreed the events currently planned for July will not be able to go ahead. As you will read in the Clerk’s update, the postponed Automotive Dinner planned for 1st July, the Summer Court and Dinner scheduled for 15th July, and the Guildhall Banquet postponed to 23rd July will all be cancelled.
I am aware of how much of a disappointment this will be for everyone who was looking forward to these events and hoping we may be able to salvage something from this Livery year. However, notwithstanding any restrictions that may be imposed by the government, we do not believe it would be fair to ask Liverymen and their guests to come to social events in the City of London for the foreseeable future.
We will continue to monitor advice and direction from the government and the Lord Mayor’s office, and will only consider arranging something appropriate when the time is right.
In the meantime, I send my best wishes to you and your family, so stay well, stay safe, take care.
Richard Charlesworth MVO
