About the Award to Industry:
In 1970 following a long period of deliberation, the Court of the Worshipful Company of Coachmakers and Coach Harness Makers decided to establish the Livery Committee in order to promote communication between the Court and the Livery.
The first action of the Livery Committee was to organise a “working” dinner of Liverymen from which emerged the idea of the Coachmakers Award to Industry. The Court approved the concept and sanctioned two awards annually, one to aerospace and one for motoring. Two silver trophies and silver medals were commissioned from Her en Mevront Leo de Vroomen. The sculpture is held for the year and the medal kept in perpetuity.
The criteria for an award was decreed to be:
"for outstanding contributions to technological advancement in transport, also involving elegance and commercial significance"
The purpose of the Award is to recognise the contribution made by an individual or by an organisation to elegance in coach building or to advances in transport; excluding horsedrawn transport which is the subject of a separate consideration. The Award is made annually subject to there being a suitable recipient and is assessed on the basis of:-
Elegance in design and/or technical development and/or innovation and/or commercial significance and/or excellence
Awards were first made in 1972 and today, the Livery normally makes a single award each year. A list is attached of those honoured thus far but as can be seen the Court may decide not to make an award every year.
Although the Livery Committee evaluates candidates for the award and makes recommendations to the Court, the original purpose was to promote dialogue and it is to be hoped that Liverymen will play their part in this process by bringing to the Livery Committee’s attention companies and organisations whose activities fit the citation and merit recognition.
The Annual Award to Industry is then the occasion when the Master makes the presentation. Guests for the gathering will include representatives from the award winning organisation and senior Past Masters of the Company who held the office of Master 10 years or more ago. Table pieces graciously given to the Company by past Award winners are displayed at this and other Court and Livery functions.
The event is invariably well attended and Liverymen are encouraged to bring guests, especially those who may, in the future, have an interest in joining the company.
