About the Election of Sheriffs:
The Election of Sheriffs is a colourful and formal ceremony held in the historic setting of Guildhall. In the past, Liverymen were required to attend and, although absence is no longer a ‘fining’ offence, Liverymen will wish to exercise their Franchise in the new circumstances of the Mayorality of the City. Moreover, one will be witnessing a democratic ceremony rooted in tradition.
To that end attendance of Liverymen in Common Hall for the election is controlled. Only those who have been Liverymen for a period of 1 year are entitled to vote and those seeking entrance to the election must be provided with a pass. Entrance through the Wicket Gates to Common Hall without a pass is possible, but Liverymen so entering will be required to wait whilst the voting register is checked and proof of identity confirmed. Passes can be ordered on an appropriate form which will be sent to Liverymen some 4 weeks prior to the election.
The event takes place on Midsummers Day which is mid June and the ceremony in Guildhall starts at 11.45 am, but it is wise to be seated by 11.30 am. There are no specific seating arrangements for Liverymen and the ceremony finishes at about 13.00 hrs.
Traditionally, the Tallow Chandlers’ have invited the Coachmakers to attend a lunch in their Hall following the Election. The number of places allocated is about 8 10 and Tallow Chandlers’ prepare a seating plan for this event and so names are essential. If you are attending the lunch it is, on a fine day, a pleasant walk from Guildhall to Dow Gate Hill.
Dress for the event is business suit and parking is available on meters at Guildhall (max 2 hrs). The nearest underground stations are St Pauls, Moorgate or Bank (all equidistant at 500 yards) and for Tallow Chandlers’ Hall, Canon Street station could not be more convenient.
