About the Dinner for Honoured Guests:
The 18th and 19th centuries heralded political and religious change, franchise reforms, the industrial revolution and the development of new trades. Livery Companies adapted to the new circumstances and, although the old power base and responsibilities disappeared, alternative ways were found to contribute to the support of trade and industry and to breath new life into the concept and the traditions.
Today, Livery Companies thrive, and there are now over 100 in the City and the Coachmakers have close contacts with a large number of them. The Liveries of the ‘leather trades’ are closely associated through the horse and the carriage. We therefore enjoy a close working relationship with the Girdlers, the Saddlers, the Cordwainers, the Curriers, the Loriners, the Glovers and the Wheelwrights with whom we anticipated a joint Charter back in 1632, as well as the Leathersellers, with whom we have today an annual Golf match.
In addition, the Carmen and the Guild of Hackney Carriage Drivers are close trade relatives and we have strong affiliations with the Guild of Air Pilots and Air Navigators, the practitioners, who fly our “coaches” of the air. We also enjoy a special relationship with the Tallow Chandlers who provide us with a home for our treasures. The Stationers and Newspaper Makers kindly invite us to use their hall for lunches after the United Guilds Service and the Lord Mayor’s Show and we share our annual Carol Service with the Fanmakers and the Glass Sellers at St James’s Garlickhythe.
During the year we enjoy the company, hospitality and friendship of a number of other Livery Companies with whom from time to time close relationships develop. Additionally, as the company responsible for initiating and managing the annual inter Livery Golf Competition (The Prince Arthur Cup belongs to the Coachmakers) we are pivotal to one of the City’s most popular and keenly contested annual sporting events.
The annual Dinner for Honoured Guests is then the Coachmakers’ opportunity to reciprocate hospitality and extend the hand of friendship to new and old friends. This gathering is regarded in the Livery fraternity as one of the most relaxed, enjoyable and popular Dinners of the City year and Liverymen are warmly invited to bring their own personal guests.
