About the Automotive Industry Dinner:
When the horse-drawn carriage was superseded at the turn of the century the number of coachmakers who changed with the times was not large and their number diminished even more when hand-made motor coachwork gave way to the all steel pressed body of the mass produced cars.

However, a number of motor manufacturers recognised in the Coachmakers Company, a City Livery with which they could be identified and they were soon joined by the makers of coaches of the air; the aircraft manufacturers.

After the war there was a revival of interest in carriage driving and in the restoration and reproduction of coachwork on original motor car chassis. In 1979 Coachmakers Company Class awards were presented for the first time at a Coachmakers weekend at Beaulieu National Motor Museum. Six years later in his year of office, 1985, Past Master Richard Dallimore launched an appeal to establish a Motor Car Centenary Fund to provide an annual Bursary to enable an outstanding designer with the opportunity to advance his or her career in the field of automotive design. The competition is open to automotive design students in colleges and polytechnics and to practising designers in the Motor Industry, who are under 28 years of age. The Royal College of Art is involved in the management of the competition and an eminent group of motor enthusiasts adjudicate the presented work and make recommendation to the Court.

The annual Motor Industry Dinner is the occasion when the automotive associated element of the Company gathers to listen to leaders in the industry and to congratulate those students awarded a Livery Motor Car Centenary Bursary.
